Siti Nurbaya is the main character in the original novel written by Siti Noerbaja Angry Roesli published by Balai Pustaka in 1920'an era. With a background of traditional Minangkabau culture, this novel revolves around romance lovers, Siti Nurbaya and Samsul Bahri which failed because of circumstances and culture of the time. In this novel we also can see how elements of culture of paternalism and feudalism has a crucial role in determining one's fate. Siti Nurbaya forced to marry a wealthy merchant named Datuk Meringgih.
With a sly intent Datuk Maringgih lend money to King Solomon. Thanks to money from Datuk Maringgih pinjangan, the trading business Majesty thrive.
