Not just a breakthrough in governance, in the Abbasid period, developing scientific tradition as well. The most obvious one is the method of writing history. Philip K. Hitti in History of the Arabs states, in the Abbasid period, the method of writing history has been ripe for the birth of the formal history.

In the past, the writing of history is based on the legends and anecdotes in pre-Islamic. Also, based on religious traditions that revolve around the name and life of the Prophet. However, when the Abbasid dynasty came to power, the writing of historical progress. Writing is attached to the legends, traditions, biographies, geneologi, and narration.

History is also narrated through the narrative of the witnesses or contemporaries with the author. This is done through a chain of witnesses of history. This method has been considered to ensure the accuracy of the data even up to the calendar of events, covering the month and day of the incident.

The first formal historians at that time was Ibn Qutaybah the full name of Muhammad ibn Muslim Al Dinawari. Ibn Qutaybah died in Baghdad in 889 AD after the finish writing his book, Kitab al Maarif or book knowledge.

Other well-known historian contemporaries was Abu Hanifah Ahmad ibn Dawood Al Dinawari. He lived in Isfahan. The main work of Al Dinawari is Al Akhbar Al Thiwal (Fiction), which is the world's history from the standpoint of Persia. Later, came the name of Abu al-Hasan Ali al Mas'udi.
